Winterizing your mobile home is important to protect it from the cold weather and prevent damage. Here are some tips:

  • Insulate your pipes. This will help to prevent them from freezing and bursting. You can use foam insulation sleeves, heat tape, or both. Make sure the outlet that it is plugged into is operable and not overloading your breaker.
  • Seal all openings. This includes doors, windows, and around roof vents and pipes. You can use caulk, weatherstripping, or foam sealant.
  • Skirt your mobile home. This will help to keep the cold air out from underneath. You can use vinyl, aluminum, or other materials.
  • Protect your outside faucets & shut off valves. Disconnect any hoses from your outdoor faucets and bring them inside. You may also want to cover your air conditioner and other outdoor units. You will want to make sure that the water shut off valve is well insulated and or has heat tape around it that is plugged in.
  • Add extra insulation. If you live in a very cold climate, you may want to add extra insulation to the underbelly of the mobile home and make sure that the plastic sheeting is without holes and tears that goes across the underbelly of your mobile home.
  • Drain your water system. If the mobile home will be unoccupied for a period of time. We recommend that the water is drained from the pipes, faucets, and water heater. You can use an air compressor to blow out any remaining water from the pipes.

Here are some additional tips:

  • Get your furnace serviced and checked prior to cold weather. This will help prevent a last minute emergency expense. Make sure that all the ducts are pushing warm air to all of the rooms. This warm air will help keep your pipes from freezing, since your ducts are located underneath most mobile homes where there plumbing is running too.
  • Use draft stoppers. You can buy or make your own draft stoppers to block cold air from coming in around doors and windows.
  • Keep your gutters and downspouts clean. This will help to prevent ice dams from forming on your roof.
  • Check on your mobile home regularly during the winter. This will help you to catch any problems early on.
